2006 ALCS

A few years ago and completely out of nowhere, I decided I wanted to try sports writing. As a kid growing up, I was really into baseball. I collected cards, went to games here and there, and even made some good catches myself as short stop. The following documents the Detroit Tiger's 2006 ALCS sweep of the Oakland A's. read

No Comply: Skateboarding Speaks On Authority

My second publishing project went from concept to completion in under four months with the help of Los Angeles based artist Dale Dreiling who provided 30+ illustrations, and fellow Bay Area writer Travis Jensen, who co-published the 63-contributor anthology alongside my own FunNotFame Productions. Overseeing the process as editor-in-chief was quite an opportunity, and the invaluable experience of printing the book by hand would be outstanding for any writer. The book was well-received by the skateboarding community with positive reviews in over two dozen print and online sources, and we were able to fund a West Coast book tour turning a profit off the first printing of 1200. Order And Liberty

This piece was submitted to an essay contest, the goal to explore the relationship between order and liberty in modern American society quoting from the Constitution or the Federalist Papers as supporting material. The work is an example of abstract, political, intellectual writing, and I believe it made top 40 out of a hundred+ entries. read

First Choice Remarketing

Although slightly edited, automobile fleet remarketer Pamela Pence contacted me to rewrite the following site content for her firm, First Choice Remarketing. The company has an extensive client list including notable Fortune 500 companies. Pamela gave me a few pages of company notes, and the aim of the work was to distill them to persuade and inform in as few words as possible. I completed the job in three hours and the team was thoroughly satisfied with both the quality and turnaround. read

Ruling Sure To Cause Controversy

I wrote this article in January of 2005 after 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Cooper ruled in Cobb County School Board v. Selman et al. The main challenge of the piece was to cover the issue in a way that was non-partisan, attempting to avoid the religio-political hot potato of evolution, creationism and intelligent design. read

Mrs. Piety v. The Non-Persons

Originally appearing in SLAP magazine, this anecdotal piece was inspired by an altercation between a nun and some skateboarders I observed while eating a bean, rice and cheese burrito. read

On Making A Living

This lengthy piece represents my foray into the world of self-help or motivational writing, heavily influenced by psychology and the writings of Maslow, Freud, James and others. When I was a kid, I picked up one of those Napoleon Hill books about creating wealth. Some of Hill's stories are admittedly corny, but in general, principles contain power. read

Lord Of The Flies Journal

This piece is my high-school English essay contrasting William Golding's 1954 classic Lord Of The Flies with the movie. Two film adaptations were done, the first in 1963, the second in 1990, and I can't recall off hand which we were shown. In retrospect, I see in this work the early seeds of my interest in screenwriting and directorial concerns. read

Freshman Year Career Study Essay: Fiction Writer

The following essay is reproduced exactly as I wrote it in ninth grade English class, hence, one or two typos and a few grammatical oddities remain. The original draft was a six-page, handwritten piece, with an extended outline and annotated bibliography. The work shows a focused desire to write professionally from an early age and a general understanding of the craft. Stumbled upon in a box in the closet at age nineteen, it was this essay that re-ignited my interest in writing, and ultimately sparked my career shortly thereafter. read
